Jenna Mammina & Rolf Sturm are two giant talents with a million miles of road behind them.
Often performing more than 250 shows per year, Jenna Mammina is a master interpreter of the jazz and pop song catalog, and a gifted songwriter as well. Raised in a musical household in Michigan -- home to luminary vocal legends like Aretha Franklin, Betty Carter, and her mentor, Abbey Lincoln – Jenna began wooing audiences at the tender age of 5, the powerful, healing gift of music already in bud.
“I have fallen under Jenna’s spell,” writes Oakland Tribune music critic Jim Herrington. “I hope to never recover from it.” He’s not alone.
Jazziz Magazine recognized Jenna as one of the leading women of jazz/pop crossover for three years in a row, and once featured her on the cover alongside Diana Krall and Norah Jones. She was named Jazz Performer of the Year by SF Weekly, and her album “Meant To Be” was nominated for best album in the California Music Awards. Jenna has performed with a vast array of legendary talent, such as Bobby McFerrin, June Millington, Rickie Lee Jones, Al Jarreau, Phish, David Sanborn, Ray Obiedo, Will Ackerman, Liz Story, Tuck Andress, and Rosemary Clooney, playing esteemed venues such as Yoshi’s (Oakland, CA), Town Hall (New York), The Green Mill (Chicago), and festivals such as Jazz Aspen, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage, Monterey San Francisco, Big Sur and Mount Hood.
A master of the nylon-stringed jazz guitar, Rolf Sturm is a player’s player, having earned the praise of master musicians Joe Pass, Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, and Bill Frisell, among others. He has recorded tracks on over 60 CDs with a host of top talents that include Tony Trischka, Loudon Wainwright, Anthony Braxton, Billy Martin, to name a few. With credits on soundtracks for both film and television, his music has also been featured on National Public Radio’s All Songs Considered. Rolf’s solo guitar recording, “Balance”, was awarded 4 stars in DownBeat magazine. Rolf has toured throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, performing at top venues such as Lincoln Center (New York), Town Hall (New York), and the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC), and top festivals including the World Expo 2000 (Hanover, Germany), JVC Jazz Festival, Boston Folk Festival, Syracuse Jazz Festival, Ripplefest, Music On The Mountain Festival, and the Toronto Jazz Festival.
A magical, musical seed was planted when Jenna & Rolf first met at the very end of 1995. Both were in a rehearsal for a rock orchestra called “Illuminati,” a 20-piece ensemble focused on the music of the Grateful Dead. Over the course of touring and recording with the band they found a close musical connection, and talked about putting together a duo....“someday.”
In early 2014, the two at last got together over tea in New York City and decided that “someday” had arrived. Soon they recorded their first album and began touring in New York, Michigan, Mexico, California, and beyond.
Audiences are unanimous – this is a very special pairing!
