Introducing Danny Hull

Danny Hull was in sixth grade when he first heard a recording of This Train Is Bound For Glory, with a "rootin'-tootin' sax solo in it that turned me sideways."
From that early inspiration, Danny grew into a multi-instrumental virtuoso who has inspired audiences all around the world. You’ve heard Danny’s sax, flute, harmonica, keyboards and vocals either in performance with, or on the recordings of top musicians going back to the early ‘70s – starting out with the horn-driven, funk-jazz-rock sound of the Bay Area band Lydia Pense & Cold Blood (a style proudly named ‘East Bay Grease’) and the Buddy Miles Band (Buddy was drummer for Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies). Danny crafted and recorded iconic sax hooks for Journey, Eddie Money, Jimmy Messina, Delaney Bramlett, Michael Bolton, Russell Ferrante, Robben Ford, The Doobie Brothers, and the Shane Dwight Band… Danny even has a rare credit for playing guitar on the Michael Jackson hit, “Bad!” |
His own jazz-R&B projects, The Danny Hull Quintet & Spang-A-Lang, are renowned in the South Bay area (San Jose, CA) for their A-list, super-group ensembles, featuring Danny, Grammy Award-winning vocalist Tony Lindsay, Steve Czarnecki on keyboards and vocals, drummer/vocalist Ron E. Beck, and Bob Boehm on bass and vocals. Over the years, whether playing with these bands, or with Columbia recording artist Clifford Coulter as Thunder and Lightning, or with Chris Cain, Tony Lindsay, Ron E. Beck and Clifford as Blue Monday Danny has made an indelible impression on the west coast music scene.
“Bound for glory” describes the experience of hearing Danny in concert. His preternatural instincts to swing and syncopate while taking flight on a blues-tinged solo is the stuff that sends hearts soaring. Funky gospel and R&B ring from his singing voice with a spirit that gets audiences fired up! (No wonder he was chosen to follow Michael McDonald in the Doobies...)
