“Hey Mike, I’m thinkin’ franchise, y’know?” –Walter Becker to Michael McDonald after listening to Aja Vu during an interview on the Greg Kihn Show, 98.5 KFOX-FM Classic Rock
Close your eyes for a moment and you're in the sultry 1970's, driving the highway with windows down and FM radio up -- loud enough to immerse yourself in the seductive vibe of one of the coolest bands of the era, Steely Dan. They played a never-before heard blend of rock, jazz, latin music, R&B, and blues; adventurous songs with brilliant arrangements and evocative lyrics that were so absorbing you felt cheated when the DJ skipped to the next band.
Now open your eyes, and enjoy the marvel that is Aja Vu -- a band so good that, after hearing them live, legendary classic rock DJ Greg Kihn said: “That sounded more like Steely Dan than Steely Dan sounds like Steely Dan.”
"It took us two-and-a-half years before we had our first gig. We couldn't have done it any quicker," says guitarist Ron Jamison, an original member of the band along with his daughter and vocalist, Robyn Ashley, Jim Starr on lead vocal and trombone, and saxophonist Greg Albright. With a vision to nail every chord, line, lick and nuance of the classic Steely Dan repertoire, they recruited other top players willing to commit to make it great -- including Larry Tag on bass, Brad Catania on trumpet and percussion, Dave Hawkes and Jimmie Adams on drums, and Brian Withycombe on keys.
From "Hey Nineteen" and "Reelin' In The Years" to "Deacon Blues" and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", Aja Vu brings fresh life to the sophisticated, alluring music and storytelling that made Steely Dan one of the greatest bands of a generation.
